  • Air Norton 7 DP793

The 6-string version of the Air Norton has proven to be an effective, versatile pickup in both neck and bridge positions, and the Air Norton 7 extends the same qualities to 7-string guitars.

In the neck position, the sound is warm and well-defined?equally useful with clean or overdriven amps. In the bridge position, the sound is very solid and harmonically rich. In overdrive mode, it has a very distinctive voice that has both vintage and modern qualities. The Air Norton 7 comes with 4-conductor cable.

Recommended For: Solid body and semi hollow body guitars.

Tech Talk: In the neck position, the Air Norton 7 is a warm, open-sounding pickup with enough power to balance with higher-output bridge pickups like the Tone Zone 7, Blaze Custom and Evolution 7. In the bridge position, the sound is medium output with solid lows and biting harmonics. It matches up well with the PAF 7 or Blaze neck model in the neck position. Due to the use of Virtual Vintage technology in the coil construction, split and parallel modes are also very effective; the sound is very vintage single-coil, without a severe volume drop.

    Blaze Bridge DP702

The Blaze Bridge Model bears a strong resemblance to the Steve's Special. The mids are scooped out, and both treble and bass are boosted. The hot bass response gives the seventh string a lot of impact, while opening up the midrange keeps it from getting muddy. This enables the Blaze Bridge Model to handle both fast soloing and clean chords, because individual notes won't smear together with heavy overdrive, and clean sounds have an almost "hi-fi" quality.

Tech Talk: We designed the Blaze Bridge Model with a scooped midrange, to keep the low seventh string as bright and open-sounding as possible. Chords are very clean, and even heavy overdrive retains a lot of definition.

    Blaze Custom DP703

The Blaze Bridge Model has a very distinct ?clean overdrive? sound. The Blaze Custom Bridge was built for 7-string players who prefer a hotter bridge pickup with more mid-range. Because more power is focused in the middle of the guitar's range, the Blaze Custom Bridge will overdrive an amp more easily and the sound will be fatter. We still don't want the seventh string to get muddy, so we used our dual-resonance design to add some crispness to the low end. You'll get more attack and hotter harmonic overtones, too.

    Recommended For: Bridge position.

Tech Talk: This is designed to be a soloists' pickup. We brought the power up a little from the Blaze bridge model, rounded the high end off and increased the mids. We did this with fully-cranked amps and overdrive pedals in mind, but you can also get clean chord sounds with the four-conductor parallel and splitting options.

    Blaze Middle DP701

Seven-string guitars are hard to amplify. Most players tune the seventh string to a low B (or even A), and it's a real trick to get a big, solid tone from the other strings without the seventh turning to mud. The Blaze single-coil is exceptionally tight, and is designed to be a match for the Blaze humbuckers in split mode. Both lows and highs are bright and clean.

Recommended For: All positions. Also available with reverse polarity to achieve hum canceling when used in pairs.

Tech Talk: 14K ohms may seem like a lot of resistance for a single-coil, but the Blaze is not at all muddy - it's bright and even-sounding through the entire 7-string frequency range.

    Blaze Neck DP700

This is the model originally designed for the neck position of the Ibanez Universe. The neck position needs to be warm, but not too fat (nobody wants the low B sounding like a tuba, right?), so we scooped out some of the mids to brighten up the low notes and we kept the power down to a reasonable level to avoid unnecessary sludge. You can get everything from a good jazz sound with a clean amp to a wall-of-sound with heavy overdrive. Many players have discovered this is also a very good bridge pickup when playing with a serious amount of distortion?power chords retain more openness, and single notes have a lot of clarity.

    Recommended For: All positions

Tech Talk: The trend of the last several years has been to play 7-strings with massive overdrive. Taking the extreme low end of the seventh string into account, we've been recommending the Blaze neck model for the bridge position as well, where the lower output and tighter lows create better chord definition. The latest 7-strings Ibanez has built for Korn have been equipped this way.

    D Activator 7 Bridge DP720

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound: powerful, clean, open-sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. This also fits the description of a great 7-string pickup, if the problems associated with active pickups sterile sound and limited headroom ? could be eliminated. The D Activator 7 bridge model does just that. It has the same loud yet clean sound as the best active humbuckers, and killer harmonics. The low B string is all about attack, not mud. It responds instantly to hard or light picking. In a word, it rocks. No batteries required.

    Recommended For: Bridge

Tech Talk: Like the 6-string version, the bridge D Activator 7 has a very focused attack that hits the amp hard and makes it feel' more powerful than it actually specs out to be. We also wanted to avoid the limiting effect that can occur with active pickups when they are played hard. Our pickup is passive with a lot of headroom, and it responds quickly and accurately to changes in pick attack. A hard pick attack doesn't cause the signal to flatten out, and picking more softly or rolling the volume control down lets the sound clean up naturally. Like all passive pickups, D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

    D Activator 7 Neck DP719

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound: powerful, clean, open-sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. This also fits the description of a great 7-string pickup, if the problems associated with active pickups sterile sound and limited headroom ? could be eliminated. The D Activator 7 does just that. The neck model has both power and clarity ? the low B string stays solid and doesn't sound like mud with extreme overdrive, and the high strings sing all the way up the neck. And it doesn't need batteries.

Recommended For: Neck. Can also be used in bridge position

Tech Talk: It's tough to get a clear tone from the low B string in the neck position without making the unwound strings sound brittle, and even harder with a high-output pickup. The two D Activator 7 coils are tuned to different frequencies that complement each other and allow the pickup to ?speak? clearly, with the power concentrated in the most effective frequency range. Like all passive pickups, D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

    D Sonic 7 DP706

Clarity, warm tone and high output are the qualities that define the D Sonic. John Petrucci agrees. He's had a lot of recent experience playing the D Sonic on his 6-string guitars, so when he wanted the same sound from his 7-string, we couldn't say no. The D Sonic combination of clean and heavy that works so well with high gain amps for both chords and soloing makes a great choice for a 7-string bridge pickup. The high strings sing and the low strings growl.

    Recommended For: Bridge position

Tech Talk: As with the 6-string D Sonic, the character of the sound can be altered by reversing the installation direction. This can be particularly important because of the effect it will have on the low B string. With the solid bar polepiece towards the neck, the low B will be fat and heavy. With the bar towards the bridge, the sound will be tighter with more attack. The solid bar coil is also warmer-sounding, so two different single-coil sounds are available with coil-splitting.

    Evolution 7 DP704

The basic characteristics of the 6-string Evolution bridge model sound like a perfect description for a 7-string lead pickup: power, attack and presence. Combining the basic Evolution design with Virtual Vintage technology results in a 7-string pickup possessing crunching lows and intense highs. The output voltage of the Evolution 7 is concentrated towards the upper mids and treble, so there's a lot of cutting power, and the low end stays hot and clear.

    Recommended For: Bridge position.

Tech Talk: Making a 7-string version of a pre-existing 6-string pickup is not a simple matter of copying specs. Particularly with a high-output pickup, it's important that the low B string doesn't get muddy-sounding. We made the Evolution 7's coils brighter-sounding than the 6-string version to make sure this doesn't happen. We then used some of the same technology that went into the Virtual Vintage design to warm up the sound of the high strings without affecting the low B. The bass strings have a lot of clean power and the high strings cut through without sounding thin.

    PAF 7 DP759

As the popularity of 7-string guitars has grown, so has the demand for a clean-sounding, lower-output pickup that performs like the classic humbuckers of the late 50s. Far from being a modification to a 6-string design, the PAF 7 is specifically designed for 7-string guitars, and incorporates some of the same technology employed in the Virtual Vintage pickup series to produce a sound that's both clean and open on the low notes and warm and rounded on the highs. The PAF 7 comes with 4-conductor cable.

    Recommended For: All positions

Tech Talk: It's a well-known fact that humbuckers from the 1950s employed Alnico 2, 3 or 5. We found that by using a ceramic magnet in the PAF 7 we could achieve the same low magnet-pull as Alnico 2 or 3, with the power of Alnico 5. The ceramic magnet keeps the sound of the low strings bright and clean, and Virtual Vintage technology inside the coils is responsible for warm high notes and the playing feel of '50s humbuckers.

    Tone Zone 7 DP755

The Tone Zone 7 is not merely an adaptation of the original Tone Zone, but a new design from the ground up for 7-string guitars. It incorporates lower magnet-pull and coils specifically calibrated to reproduce the full impact of the low ?B? string without any loss of tone quality or fidelity. The Tone Zone 7 comes with 4-conductor cable.

    Recommended For: Bridge position

Tech Talk: We wanted to retain the power and sound of the Tone Zone in the Tone Zone 7, but we also wanted to reduce the magnet-pull to let the low B string resonate better. We found the best way to do this was to use a ceramic magnet, rather than the Alnico 5 magnet employed in the original Tone Zone. The physical differences between 7 and 6-string pickups allowed us to alter the construction of the Tone Zone 7 so that it performs as if it has an Alnico magnet, but its ceramic magnet is actually more stable over time, and there's about 40% less magnet pull. X2N 7 DP705

What's the story with 7-string guitarists? They always want more; more strings, more bass response, more notes to play with, and of course, more power. Okay, we got the message. The X2N-7 is the answer. If you're looking for pretty sound, don't go here. If you're looking for pretty crazy, this is it. Like the original 6-string model, the X2N-7 is ridiculously loud, but we've totally redesigned the coils to capture the entire frequency response of all 7 strings. And for players who experience occasional moments of sanity, the parallel humbucking and split-coil modes are available for cleaner and quieter sounds.

Recommended For: Bridge position, solid body guitars

Tech Talk: We were concerned that a pickup as hot as the X2N would make the seventh string sound too muddy, but we've recently come up with a new way to use our dual resonance coil design to solve the problem. There's a tremendous amount of power focused on the center of the guitar's frequency range, but spreading out the tuning of the two coils allows the sound to open up more than a standard high-output pickup could, and this also allows the seventh string to stay relatively tight.
